The purpose of these articles, is to show the importance of Creating Safer Havens. Our intent in sharing these cases is to bring an awareness of the 'Secret Sins' that are going on around us daily. These are only a few of the many thousands of cases occurring within the church and places where children are supposed to be kept safe. Let's not be fooled into thinking these types of acts are limited to churches and after school programs. In this fast-paced world we live in, these 'Secret Sins' are happening everywhere. As you will see below, children are being violated by pastors, therapists, music directors, volunteer workers, school teachers, coaches, and sadly, the list goes on. Our hopes at Creating Safer Havens is that the seriousness of this problem will no longer be overlooked, and the importance of protecting our children will become top priority.

Church Daycare Volunteer Charged With Sexual Assault of a Child (CBSDFW.com) |
| |
Police are looking for any more possible victims after a 19 year-old former church daycare volunteer was arrested on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 6.
The alleged assault took place inside the children’s ministry at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Lake Worth.
Court documents obtained by CBS11 say the victim, who is 4 years old, said a “boy put his mouth on him” and pointed to his crotch area.
The search warrant, obtained by CBS 11, says the boy told his mother what happened as they were leaving church.
When the family went back in, documents say the boy pointed at a teenage volunteer, 19-year-old Ryan Welborn, and the child’s mother went after him.
Welborn had to be put in a safe room, according to court documents, to separate him from the boy’s mother.
Court documents say the boy has had nightmares about the incident.
Police took DNA samples from both the child and Welborn, which were later analyzed.
Once police got the results, they obtained an arrest warrant.
Welborn was arrested on January 2nd and released under a $30,000 bond. |

Sentencing for man convicted of daycare molestation
- Update of 5/20/2011 article |
| |
A San Diego man who molested a 4-year-old girl at his wife's home daycare business is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in a downtown courtroom.
Hector Herrera, 54, faces up to 23 years to life in state prison after being convicted in October of oral copulation on a minor and child molest. A jury acquitted the defendant of molesting the victim's two older brothers.
The case against Herrera came to light on May 16, 2011, when the 4-year-old girl told her mother that she was molested several days earlier by the defendant at Shining Stars Daycare, said prosecutor Harrison Kennedy.
According to the prosecution, the molestation took place while Herrera was not working and was instead helping his wife with her business by laying down the children for naps and watching them while she was cooking.
San Diego police said Herrera's wife apparently was unaware of her husband's actions. But her business was immediately shuttered nonetheless pending an investigation by the Community Care Licensing Division of the state Department of Social Services, which monitors daycare facilities. It's unclear if it ever reopened. |

Male babysitter charged with 49 counts of child sexual abuse |
| |
A babysitting male Gateway Technical College student, Alexander R. Richter, 28, has been jailed after being accused of molesting six young children while in his care. Richter, from Racine, Wis., has been charged with 49 felony counts of child sexual abuse. Richter videotaped those sexual assaults.
Police said Friday that they’re concerned more child victims are out there.
Authorities have stated that Richter volunteered his service as a babysitter and then “repeatedly had sex with the boys and girls on camera as they cried and begged him to stop,” according to the Associated Press.
Police have identified six of the children from Richter’s videos.
Richter is accused of making at least 11 videos of himself having sex with both children, including one in which police say he guided the boy into attempted sexual activity with his sister.
The children in the videos informed police that Richter performed anal and oral sex with them on several occasions, used sex toys on them, and videotaped them taking baths.
DVDs recovered from Richter’s home show Richter engaging in sexual activities with at least two of the children. There were also photos confiscated of the kids posing naked and performing sexual acts on one another.
One of Richter’s DVDs was titled _Monster Unleashed_ and showed Richter having sex with three young girls and one little boy.
The youngest of the children is a baby girl who was just four months old at the time of the abuse.
In some of the footage, the children are crying and can be heard telling Richter to stop or seen trying to fight him off, according to the complaint. |

Former Tulsa church child-care worker enters plea in abuse case |
| |
A former Tulsa church child-care worker pleaded no contest Monday to charges of abusing two young children, with the offenses separated by almost two years in time.
Meredith Allison Howard, 40, will be sentenced Jan. 29 on two felony charges of child abuse by injury.
In one case Howard is charged with using unreasonable force on an 8-month-old boy, and breaking that baby's thigh bone. This occurred on Dec. 8, 2008, at a day care affiliated with Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian, 4102 E. 61st St.
The other case involves an accusation that Howard inserted her finger into the vagina of a 19-month-old girl in November 2010 at the John Knox Child Development Center. Howard was a teacher's assistant at the center.
A police officer testified at a preliminary hearing that when questioned, Howard said she accidentally inserted a finger into the girl's vagina while in the process of changing her diaper.
A pediatrician determined that the girl's extensive injury required surgery and was "likely inflicted trauma and consistent with child sexual abuse," a police affidavit says.
In the case involving the Kirk of the Hills' Mothers' Day Out program, the District Attorney's Office decided in 2009 not to file a charge. But prosecutors filed both charges of child abuse by injury on Nov. 9, 2010, after allegations related to the John Knox center surfaced.
Howard had worked at that center for about a year as of November 2010.
In applying for the job, she reported that she had a slight learning disability, according to testimony at a hearing last year. |

Son of day care worker charged with child sex abuse |
| |
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says that the 17-year-old son of a former daycare worker has been charged with sexually abusing multiple children.
Eric Lemont Higdon was arrested Aug. 31 and charged as an adult with sexual abuse of a child less than twelve years old and two counts of sodomy in the first degree with the victim being less than twelve years old.
Higdon is the son of a former employee of the daycare who has been "dismissed" from work there. The Sheriff's Office says that neither Higdon nor his mother are cooperating with investigators on the advice of their attorney.
The teen was arrested and charged after the Sheriff's Office investigated allegations of sexual abuse at Momma's Place Christian Academy. The daycare has a Pinson address but is located within the city of Clay.
Investigators received a report August 18 from a parent that she found her 5-year-old son touching another family member inappropriately. When the mother asked her son why he was doing that, he told her that "the suspect at the daycare had touched him that way."
The Sheriff's Office proceeded to contact all of the families on the daycare roster as well as past customers to determine if there were additional victims. Investigators say there are four total victims: two five-year-olds, one four-year-old and one three-year-old.
Christian says DHR is investigating the allegations and will determine whether or not the daycare will remain open. |

Prosecutors in Chile Investigate Schools over Allegations of Pupils being Sexually Abused |
| |
Prosecutors in Chile are investigating about 60 schools in the capital, Santiago, over allegations that pupils were sexually abused. The investigations come after reports of child sex abuse in schools and day care centers increased markedly this year.
Most of the schools are in Santiago's affluent eastern areas. Earlier this week, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced a raft of measures to combat child sex abuse. Attorney general Sabas Chahuan said 49 schools in eastern Santiago and about a dozen on the west side of the city would be investigated.
Mr Chahuan said on Friday after meeting representatives of a parents association, that wherever there are children, there will an investigation just the same as they do with corruption or economic crimes.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, complaints of sexual abuse of children under the age of 14 jumped 22% in the first half of 2012, compared to the same period in 2011.
On Wednesday, President Pinera said a database registering those convicted of sexually abusing minors or of child pornography offenses would be operational from August. A new law last month banned convicted pedophiles from working near children. |

More possible victims in minister sex abuse case |
| |
The Lake County Sheriff's Office said it's looking for more potential victims who may have been sexually abused by a minister and day care worker.
Investigators said Kenneth Hagins abused children and disabled adults at the places where he worked.
Authorities said they have identified at least six alleged victims and they believe there are more.
Investigators and the Department of Children and Families said they are working to contact children and vulnerable adults who Hagins had contact with through his jobs at a day care facility for the disabled and a church.
Hagins was a youth pastor at Promise Land Ministries in Eustis.
DCF stripped Pat's Kidz World day care of its license last week because investigators said the owner did not report child sexual abuse allegations involving Hagins.
According to authorities, one of Hagins' victims is a 4-year-old boy from the day care and another victim is an 18-year-old mentally disabled client at Sunrise Arc, which is also in Lake County.
Hagins remains in jail on $200,000 bail. |

Child Caregiver Pleads Guilty to Child Pornography Charges |
| |
A 24-year-old El Cajon man, Corey Loftin, who worked at a preschool, at the time of his arrest, and advertised his services as a babysitter, pleaded guilty to child pornography charges and faces 40 years in federal prison.
According to the plea agreement, between 2008 and April 29, 2011, Loftin used a computer to communicate via video with two 7-year-old females who lived in Pennsylvania and tried to persuade them to engage in sexually explicit conduct.
During this same time frame, Loftin was in contact with 44-year-old Michael Izadore Bonsignore of Harriburg, Penn., and asked him to record himself performing various sex acts with the minors and send him the videos.
Loftin also admitted to using a cell phone camera to take upskirt photos of two minor females at a preschool in San Diego County where he worked.
Finally, Loftin also admitted to receiving and distributing child pornography depicting the minors from Pennsylvania and other unidentified children via the internet.
Loftin previously worked at Children’s Choice daycare center in El Cajon and the Cuyamaca College Child Development Center.
Loftin also is facing more than a dozen charges of committing lewd acts and child molesting that are pending in Superior Court. Those charges involve several local victims as well.
Sentencing is scheduled for August 24. |

Daycare child molester sentenced to 80 years in prison |
| |
Andrew Keith was sentenced to 80 years in prison after using images he took of young boys he molested at his mother's in-home daycare to trade for additional child pornography.
On Wednesday, a federal judge sentenced Andrew Keith, 29, of Mason, Ohio to 80 years in prison for molesting boys at his mother’s in-home day care and sharing photos he had taken of the abuse over the Internet. Keith plead guilty to 15 counts of producing child pornography and one count each of transportation and possession of child pornography.
Keith traded 15 photographs he had taken of him sexually assaulting a child with an individual in Las Vegas, Nevada who then traded them with an individual in South Carolina who was under investigation for trading child pornography.
The FBI searched Keith’s home, a storage unit, and all of his electronic devices and found more than 600 images of child pornography in his possession. Some of the images possessed by Keith included images of children as young as infants being sexually abused.
“Keith continued to exploit children by trading hundreds of sexual abuse images he took with others,” said U.S. Attorney Carter M. Stewart, “Because Keith used these images as a means of currency to receive other images, the photographs are forever in the stream of commerce. They can never be removed from the world wide web.”
Prosecutors said Keith used his mother’s day care as a “personal hunting ground for victims” and he routinely photographed the boys while he abused them. |

Moorhead man charged in second child molestation
case |
| |
Clay County prosecutors waited nine days to file charges against
a Moorhead man accused of sexually abusing girls. The lapse in
time raises the question: What took so long?
Jon Pabody was arrested March 12th after turning himself
into police for molesting two children, a three and seven year
old. It wasn't until Wednesday that a formal felony was filed in the
latter case.
Court records show the 53 year-old admitted to police and his wife
that he forced the girl to perform oral sex on him in a bathroom at
their home daycare. She says he threatened to spank her if she
didn't do what he said.
Prosecutors approved this latest criminal sexual conduct charge on
the 21st. It carries a 30 year sentence. Police tell us the charge
comes after a thorough investigation, which took longer than the
other case. They had to talk with Pabody's wife and girl and a child
advocate in the days following his arrest.
There could be more victims, but police have not identified any.
Pabody is to be in court tomorrow. |

Teen charged with sexually abusing children at
mom’s daycare |
| |
A 17-year-old boy was charged with sexually assaulting
three young girls at his mother’s licensed home
daycare in north suburban Winthrop Harbor, police said
Tuesday.
Brett A. Degler was charged as an adult with four felony
counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and
aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Following a two-week investigation, detectives learned
that three girls -- between the ages of 4 and 11 at the
time -- were sexually assaulted from November 2011 until
March 6, Detective Sgt. Chris Willets said.
The suspect’s mother surrendered her license as a daycare
provider. “She had no idea what was going on,” Willets
said.
A parent contacted police after her child experienced pain
when going to the bathroom, Willets said, adding that the
child was then able to recount the abuse to her mother.
Degler is being held on $500,000 bond at Lake County
Jail.
Anyone with information about the incidents should call
Willets at (847) 872-2131 ext. 271. |

Youngest sex abuse victim just 19 days old |
| |
It has been revealed that the youngest victim of Robert Mikelsons, the main suspect in a case of extensive sex abuse at childcare centres in Amsterdam, was just 19 days old. During Monday's hearing, three experts gave their opinions on the effects of sexual abuse on very young children. All three agree: victims of sexual abuse suffer physical and mental problems for the rest of their lives.
Paediatrician Noor Landsmeer-Beker says some of the lifelong effects include incontinence, problems with eating or swallowing, problems with the bowels, low self-esteem and a higher chance of drug or alcohol addiction later in life.
Child psychiatrist Linda Vogtländer says many of the victims in the Amsterdam child sex abuse case are already showing symptoms of post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS) which she puts down to the severity of the abuse. They also have a higher risk of developing psychological problems.

Day-care owner molests boy while playing video games |
| |
A 10-year-old boy alleges the owner of a day-care center sexually
molested him for three months.
San Antonio police arrested Bradley Bendele over the weekend on
a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child. He was in jail on a
$100,000 bond Monday morning, but was expected to be released
Monday afternoon after he is fitted with an ankle monitoring
device.
According to an arrest warrant, the 38-year-old and his wife
operate a child-care business out of their home. The alleged
victim was one of the children they watched.
Police said the boy was sexually abused at the home from July to
October 2011. The boy told police that Bendele molested him as
the two played video games on one occasion.
Police said the suspect was aggressive and even cursed the child
during the acts as the boy tried to escape the abuse.
The boy eventually told his mother, who called police.
Investigators said Bendele allegedly had told the child he
would kill his entire family if he told anyone.
The warrant indicates that Bendele initially denied knowing the
child or playing video games with him, but police said he has since
changed his story.
However, the arrest document does not say that he has confessed
to the crime. |

New Jersey - 1/19/2012
NJ woman accused of showing child sex abuse online |
| |
A New Jersey waitress has been accused of sexually assaulting
a 5-year-old girl she was baby-sitting, laughing and chatting
with someone as she filmed the assault and streamed video of
it over the Internet.
Jennifer Mahoney is charged with sexual exploitation of a minor
on three occasions last fall. During one assault, in which the girl
was abused in a bathtub, Mahoney told her she needed to be rinsed
"like a mermaid," according to documents filed by prosecutors.
Mahoney created three pornographic videos using a video chat
session with a man in Texas, prosecutors said. She is partially
naked in the videos, and in one clip she touches herself while
sexually abusing the sleeping child, they said. In another clip, they
said, she tells the girl to bend over so she can rinse her off.
"Like a mermaid?" the girl says, according to court documents.
"Like a mermaid, sweetheart," Mahoney replies, according to an
FBI agent.
U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said Mahoney "sexually assaulted a
child, cavalierly recording and sharing the girl's humiliation over
video chat."
"We cannot forget that for every image or video of what we
call child pornography, a child will carry the lifelong scars of
rape and abuse recorded for others' gratification," Fishman
said. "Whether making, distributing or viewing child
pornography, the depraved appetites of offenders create a
market for the destruction of a child's innocence."
Mahoney, 32, has been in custody since Dec. 14, the day after the
videos were found on the computer of a Texas man to whom she
streamed them, prosecutors said.
She is due in federal court Jan. 30, when she plans to plead not
guilty, defense attorney Herb Ellis said.
Mahoney, who's from Manalapan, 35 miles southwest of New
York City, pleaded not guilty to similar state charges last week
stemming from the same case, her lawyer said.
But court documents indicate that when Mahoney was questioned
by the FBI in December, she acknowledged performing a sex act
on the child while she was baby-sitting. She also told investigators
she streamed live video of one of the sexual assaults to two men
using an online chat service and acknowledged filming another
assault with her cellphone and sending video of it to two other
people, the documents say.
According to an FBI affidavit, authorities recovered three videos
showing her sexually assaulting the girl in October and November.
The affidavit describes the sexual assaults in graphic terms. On
one, the FBI agent notes, there is no audio. But, the agent notes, "it
appears that the adult female is talking and laughing during the
video, and it appears that the adult female is talking to another
person over the Internet via a webcam."
Two of the videos appeared to have been made in Mahoney's
bedroom, the third in the bathtub of her home, the affidavit says.
The court documents make no mention of any possible charges
against the people who received the videos. |

FLA, Miami - 1/17/2012
Closing arguments given in civil trial of alleged sex
abuse at day care |
| |
Closing arguments were given today in the civil trial against a Miami day care center where the alleged sex abuse of a
5-year-old girl happened in 2008.
The family of the alleged victim is seeking $25 million claiming
Discover Day Care Inc. was negligent in not having adults
supervise children at the center at all times.
"If someone says to you, that's too much money for one person,
you say that's too much pain for a 5-year old," said attorney Jeff
Herman.
"She's being raped and she doesn't even know what sex is,"
Herman added.
During the trial, the alleged victim testified that the teacher told her
class that a 13-year-old boy, her son, was in charge during nap time
while she went out to lunch. During that time she said the boy
sexually abused her.
The defense says the incident never happened, and the alleged
abuser, now a 17-year-old, flatly denied doing anything
inappropriate with the girl.
"Did anyone at the school ever see her traumatized, crying,
complaining, acting out? No," said defense lawyer Don Hardeman.
The boy pleaded no-contest to the sexual abuse charges in the
criminal case and was sentenced to counseling, but the jury was
not told that information.
Three of the boy’s therapist did testify that he admitted to his
behavior as part of his counseling. “He admits to touching her
vagina,” said one of his therapists.
At one point in the trial the teacher testified that that she had
written a note claiming the girl had told her she had asked boy to
touch her private parts. But attorneys for victim produced
attendance records showing that the girl was absent on the day
that the teacher alleges that conversation took place.
“You did not speak to (the victim) on June 20 did you?” the lawyer
asked.
“I don’t remember,” the teacher said. |

Fed trial continued for Milton bus driver accused of
filming child sex assaults
- UPDATE of 12/20/2011 article |
| |
The federal trial for a former Provider bus driver accused of
filming his sexual contact with three children under his care was
continued this month after a request by the man's attorney was
granted by a judge.
Attorney Harry Starbranch filed the motion on Jan. 6, saying that
needed more time with his client, John Allen Wright, 45, of
Milton, to prepare for trial after the completion of a mental
competency evaluation on the man last month. Wright was
scheduled to go on trial on Jan. 18 to face five counts of sexual
exploitation of a child, alleging he coerced three different minor
children between Nov. 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011 to engage in
sexually explicit acts for the purpose of filming those acts.
Wright was arrested on Sept. 1 after an investigation by the state
Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force that began in
February 2011 led to a search warrant being executed at his home
that resulted in the discovery of an external hard drive, identified
as being used by Wright, that contained approximately 10,000
images and movies depicting child sexual abuse.
Wright was working as a school bus driver of special needs
children with Provider Enterprises Inc., for which he drove buses
in Kittery, Maine, Rochester, and other local areas, at the time of
his arrest.
Wright previously worked as a bus driver for the Milton School
District and as an assistant teacher at Rochester Child Care
Center and Quirion Preschool and Learning Center, also in
Rochester, in the 1990s, according to investigators.
Last month, Wright was indicted by the state on 15 new charges,
including numerous counts sexual assault and indecent exposure
and lewdness, alleging he engaged in sexual contact with a young
boy, now 5, while on his school bus, as seen in videos found on
Wright's computer.
According to County Attorney Tom Velardi, more charges are
likely for Wright.
Until the federal case against the former bus driver is complete,
however, the state's case will be on hold in order to not interfere
with the federal government, Velardi said.
Wright has been scheduled for a final pretrial conference on March
12 and jury selection for his trial is expected to begin on March 20
at 9:30 a.m. |

Husband and Wife Convicted of Abusing
2-year-old girl
- UPDATE of 11/10/2010 article |
| |
A husband and wife who abused a 2 ½-year-old-boy and girl at the daycare center they ran out of their Mission Valley apartment
were each sentenced to prison terms today. Mark Kaczmarczyk, 59,
was sentenced to 8 years and his 45-year-old wife, Anita, got six
years behind bars. “He is a parent’s nightmare”, the prosecutor said.
“He knew exactly what he was doing.” Judge Einhorn said Mark
Kaczmarczyk assaulted helpless children who, because of their age
and vulnerability, had the “inability to stop anybody.”
The girls’ mother, who is in the military and deployed, said the
ordeal has been emotional for her and her family. “We won’t know
how it will affect my daughter when she gets older”, she said. “No
child deserves to have their innocence taken away.” The mother
said she is leaving the military after 11 years so she can spend more
time with her daughter. She asked the judge for the harshest sentence
possible “to stop the Kaczmarczyks from hurting other families. |

Man Accused of Molesting Children in
Wife’s Home Day Care |

Hector Herrera, 52, was arrested Thurs. at his wife’s
home day care center, and booked into
county jail on suspicion of committing lewd acts
with minors, according to San Diego police. A
4-year-old girl told her mother about allegedly
being molested several days earlier by Herrera at
Shining Stars Daycare. The youngster’s two brothers,
ages 6 and 8, subsequently alleged that they also had
been inappropriately touched by Herrera. His wife,
Lupe, apparently was unaware the purported crimes had
occurred and is not being looked at as a suspect. Lupe
is defending her husband, saying that no such actions
ever happened.
Neighbors living next door to the day care say that the
Herrera’s have taken care of their children. “I can say I
know it is a lie, because they are not like that, I have known
them forever. Lupe Herrera said, “You have all the rights
in the world to ask and investigate, but the only thing I
ask please is to start checking the family making the
accusations.” Detectives are looking into the possibility of
other victims. |
